The Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics (SKBI) mourns the passing of its founding director, Professor Roberto S. Mariano, whose vision, and leadership laid the foundation for the Institute’s mission and continued impact till today.
From 2008 to 2010, Professor Mariano played a pivotal role in shaping SKBI’s early direction. Under his leadership, the Institute—together with SMU’s School of Economics—successfully hosted the 2008 Far Eastern and South Asian Meeting of the Econometric Society. He also spearheaded numerous conferences and seminars on REITs and real estate, corporate governance, silver security, and longevity risk.
Beyond his many accomplishments, Professor Mariano was a mentor, colleague, and friend to many. His wisdom, warmth, and unwavering belief in the power of education and research continues to inspire the SKBI community.
