2021 highlights

The newly set-up society Women in Sustainability and Environment (WISE) is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to ensure a strong, equal voice and representation of women in the area of sustainability in Singapore. To build knowledge and programmes around sustainability, WISE is working with SMU on several fronts. It signed an MOU with SMU for two collaborations: SMU will serve as WISE’s knowledge partner, including the curation of research content for discussion topics across various areas of sustainability, which enables more up-to-date and in-depth discussions for WISE members; and the University will also advise on the selection criteria for assessing and shortlisting the annual Women in Sustainability Awards.

With families and nations scrambling to hang on during the economic rollercoaster of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 50 top researchers from around the world are coming together in the G53 Financial Literacy and Personal Finance Research Network. The new group aims to expedite research and solutions that can help people strap on their seatbelts and be better prepared for financial crises, big and small. The G53 Network is powered by the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Centre at George Washington School of Business and the SMU Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics.

In an interview, SMU Assistant Professor of Finance (Education) Aurobindo Ghosh, who is the Programme Director for the Citi Foundation-SMU Financial Literacy Programme for Young Adults, discussed the annual financial stability review released by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), and what households and individuals should look out for in an uncertain economic climate.

CNA (Singapore Tonight, 10pm) (Dec 6)

Sharing his views on improving India's competitiveness for inclusive growth at an event co-organised by CUTS International and Institute for Studies in Industrial Development, Rajiv Lall, Professorial Research Fellow at the SMU Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics, emphasised the need to craft the next generation of reforms, which would require a degree of nuance and sophistication. The reforms should actually result in desirable outcomes, which can only happen by bolstering the capacity and capability of the state.
