The Rise of Chinese Finance: the Digital Game of Dian Fu(顛覆)!
By David Lee
Abstract
Concomitant with the meteoric rise of the Chinese Economy, financial institutions in China have grown so large in a compressed time through innovation and technology that the parallel of which is unmatched by any world economy. ICBC is now the largest bank in the world, UnionPay the largest credit card issuer, and AliPay the largest third-party payment company. Even in the P2P sector, CreditEase has come to dominate the world's P2P arena.
Many financial professionals and investors may not have diligently followed the developments in China because of the difficulty of the Chinese language and the pace at which such developments are taking place. For example, online financial services and company names such as Yu'E Bao, Zhao Cai Bao, Yu Le Bao and Zhima Credit are known to all and sundry in China, but yet may pose a challenge to those who do not have the facility of the language.
What are the portents and pitfalls of the changes and developments for China, Asia and the world at large? Will the Chinese financial giants disrupt the global financial industry just as the Chinese industrial upsurge has disrupted many nations in areas such as manufacturing, logistics and shipping?
The talk will encompass all of the above and will also cover China's strategy in employing the Bi-Lateral Swap Agreement for RMB, the setting up of Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank, the adoption of OBOR (One Belt, One Road) policy and other such related topics.
Professor David Lee will further share his observations that China may well be ahead of Silicon Valley and London in FinTech. He opines that the financial game of Dian Fu (颠覆), a popular term used to describe digital disruption and subversion in China, has just begun!
